To avoid unaccredited colleges and diploma mills, be sure to verify the accreditation status of any institution that you select! Please be aware that there are many online institutions that are either unaccredited or are accredited by agencies that are not recognized by the U.S. Department of Education. You can call the U.S. Department of Education at (202) 219-7011 to check on the legitimacy of any accrediting agency.

What is a diploma mill and how can you avoid one?
The state of Oregon is fighting back through the Department of Degree Authorization. Dr. John Bear, author of "Bear's Guide to Earning Degrees by Distance Learning," is cited by "U.S. News & World Report" and the "Chronicle of Higher Education" as a national watchdog for diploma mills.

Bellevue University participates in the Academic Quality Improvement Program (AQIP) of the Higher Learning Commission. The AQIP website was created with the help of a generous grant from the Pew Charitable Trusts. The Academic Quality Improvement Program infuses the principles and benefits of continuous improvement into the culture of colleges and universities by providing an alternative process through which an already-accredited institution can maintain its accreditation from the Higher Learning Commission. With AQIP, an institution demonstrates it meets accreditation standards and expectations through sequences of events that align with those on-going activities that characterize organizations striving to improve their performance. One of the significant events of the AQIP effort is the Systems Portfolio.

Department of Education Developments
The Department of Education has created a new website designed to combat the problem of diploma mills. According to a recent press release, students and employers can now access a master list of accredited colleges, universities, and career and trade schools thus helping combat the growing problem of diploma mills thanks to a new Department of Education website unveiled today by Department officials, the Federal Trade Commission, the Office of Personnel Management, and U.S. Reps. Mike Castle, Buck McKeon, and Tom Davis. Search for an accreditated school.

Finally, Bellevue University meets all BBBOnLine Reliability participation and Better Business Bureau membership standards and is authorized to display the BBBOnLine Reliability seal.
